Wayne Rooney 'poisoned' on Africa tour?

Manchester United teammates fear he was targeted on recent trip

Striker Wayne Rooney fell ill 2 weeks ago

Wayne Rooney may have been deliberately targeted on Manchester United's recent tour of Africa.

The footballer fell ill with a mystery bug after an exhibition match in Nigeria 2 weeks ago.

Yet he had eaten the same meals as his teammates – leading some to speculate he was poisoned. The 22-year-old star is still not well enough to play.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is said to be ‘extremely worried’.

‘There has been a lot of speculation as to what could have happened,’ an insider reveals.

‘It could have simply been a joke or something more sinister – such as a betting scam.’

But one player reckons Wayne, 22, may simply have overindulged.

‘Wayne does eat and drink more than any of the other lads,' he tells the Sunday Mirror.

'Some say that might be why he was the only one who was ill.’
