Soul legend Isaac Hayes has died.

The musician, who suffered a stroke in 2006, was found unconscious at home in Memphis, Tennessee, and pronounced dead at 7.08pm after being taken to hospital.

Isaac – a contemporary of Al Green, James Brown and Stevie Wonder – was known for his deep voice as well as his talent as a pianist, saxophone player and songwriter.

He won an Academy Award for the theme tune to the film Shaft, which was a huge hit in 1971.

A Scientologist, Isaac was married four times and had 12 children.
