The Dark Knight breaks box office records

Sell-out audiences see the Batman movie

Heath Ledger stands tall as The Joker
Heath Ledger's final film makes Hollywood history

The Dark Knight has broken box office records by taking £77.7million in its opening weekend.

The latest Batman instalment attracted sell-out audiences at a record number of cinemas across the US.

‘We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did,’ Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros, tells Access Hollywood.

The movie beat the previous record holder, Spider-Man 3, which made £75.6million in its opening weekend last May.

The late Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker in the film has been tipped as Oscar worthy.

The Dark Knight is released in the UK on Thursday.
