Comedian issues statement over controversial show
Thursday, 17 July 2008
Russell Brand has expressed his regret for making a hoax call to a police incident room during a live stage show.
The comedian told the crime hotline, set up help solve a series of sex attacks, that he had spotted the wanted person.
‘I have seen a gentleman who fits the description,’ he claimed, using a fan's mobile phone.
The female police employee realised Russ, 32, was pulling her leg when he asked her out for dinner and began to sing.
Now he has apologised for the incident, which took place at the Royal And Derngate theatre in Northampton.
‘I maintain that through discourse we can illuminate these dark behaviours but that ought not to be at the expense of people's feelings,’ he said in a statement.
Northamptonshire Police have refused to say whether further action will be taken against the comedian.
