Police are investigating the headstone theft
Thursday, 3 July 2008
The gravestone of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis has been stolen.
Thieves took the memorial stone from Macclesfield Cemetery between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.
‘There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft,’ a Cheshire Police spokesperson tells the BBC.
‘This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present.’
The plaque was scripted with the words ‘Ian Curtis 18 - 5 – 80’ and ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.
Ian was found hanged at his Macclesfield home in May 1980 at the age of 23.
An acclaimed biopic about Ian, called Control, was released in 2007.
