Security officers had to bundle Carla Bruni onto a plane when a shot was fired as she boarded a plane in Israel yesterday.
Carla, 40, was due to fly out of the country after making a state visit with French President husband Nicolas Sarkozy, 53.
An Israeli police officer killed himself at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv - just 100 metres away from the couple.
Although they did not hear the shot, which rang out while a military band was playing, the pair were seen hurrying up the steps to the aircraft.
But area police commander Nissim Mor denies the gun scare was an assassination attempt on the couple.
'We are currently investigating the circumstances to see whether it was suicide or if he accidentally discharged his weapon,' he tells The Independent.
'His mission was to secure an area to prevent people from reaching the ceremony.'
