Singer happy the ban on same-sex unions has been lifted in California

George Michael is thrilled that California has legalised gay marriages after an 8-year ban.
The singer, 44 – who kicked off his tour of North America on Tuesday – thinks it's been a long time coming.
‘It’s something that that happened…almost without a whisper in England, but it was basically because we weren’t that concerned about the word “marriage”,’ he tells the Associated Press.
‘There are a huge number of people who want [their] unions to be part of something that they can place in their religion, so [marriage is] much more important here.
'I think that’s why it’s so long in arriving here, but I think it’s fantastic, obviously.’
George’s 25 Live tour began at San Diego Sports Arena the day after the ruling. It’s his first in 17 years.
