Duffy won the Song Of The Year Award

Duffy topped her triumphant year by scooping the top prize at last night’s Mojo Awards.

The Welsh crooner’s single Mercy was named Song Of The Year at the ceremony in London.

‘It is a timeless song,’ Mojo's editor-in-chief Phil Alexander told the audience. ‘It could really have come from any period in time over the last 50 years.’

But Duffy, 23, narrowly missed out in the Best Breakthrough Act category to The Last Shadow Puppets and in Best Album field to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Other big winners included Led Zeppelin for Best Live Act, Paul Weller for his Outstanding Contribution To Music, a Hall Of Fame place for Ska band The Specials and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Genesis.

Veteran rockers The Sex Pistols even managed to behave themselves as they collected the Icon Award.

‘As punk's standard-bearers, the Sex Pistols truly redefined modern music in the space of one solitary album,’ Phil Alexander told the crowd. ‘They influenced every aspect of popular culture from fashion to the media, film and literature and on to the music industry itself.’
