This Morning presenter reveals the secret behind her dramatic weight loss
Sunday, 1 June 2008
Fern Britton has revealed that she’s had weight-loss surgery.
In 2006 the This Morning presenter had a gastric band fitted to reduce the size of her stomach and has now lost 5st.
Fern’s new figure was reported to be down to her new hobby of cycling and careful dieting but now the 50-year-old has revealed her secret.
‘As interest is so high, I am making public, as a personal choice, that I had a gastric band operation two years ago,’ Fern said in a statement yesterday.
‘I did this purely for myself and I would not wish to influence others to do the same. But for me it has worked and I am very pleased with the results.’
The mum-of-four is now in training for a charity bike ride in Cuba later this year.

I have no problem with anyone having a gastric band fitted, butwhen the weight starts falling off....at least come clean for goodness sake. Fern has made a right twit of herself, Anne Diamond tried to keep it a secret & failed, Cycling & Porridge Fern????????? NOT!
Ferns weight loss - It may not be our business - in that case keep a dignified silence, if you are going to talk for goodness sake be honest from the start - people will respect you more for it. I dislike the hypocrisy
I find peoples ignorance very frustraing I had a gastric band fitted last June so I do feel able to say yes Fern must have been cycling and eating porridge to lose the weight the band don't make you lose weight it prevents you eating large amounts that all you still have to make good choices if Fern sat and ate chocolate and didn't do any exericse she would not lose weight I find people are under the impression that the band is magic and it make all the fat disapear????????????NOT!
We dont mind anyone who chooses to have a gastric band. What we do mind is the fact that she decided not to disclose it to the nation? Her personal choice maybe, but then why steer the public into thinking that it was all down to healthy eating and cutting out her snacks etc?Fern is in the public eye almost every day,we have shared in her achievment.I wondered why she hasnt been on the front of the magazines and fitness dvds???I for one feel duped!!!!
It's precisely responses like yours Annalise that probably stopped her from admitting to it when she had it done. Whilst you admit that you have no problem with having it fitted, you clearly have no idea of how to live with one. As someone who has recently had a band fitted and is coming to terms with the complete change in eating habits it causes, I can absolutely believe that porridge has played a very important role in her diet for the last 2 years. Indeed many bandsters (when filled to the point of tight restriction) are unable to eat breakfast or lunch for that matter. Gastric bands are incredibly fickle animals and no two stores are going to be alike. Sharon Osbourne and Anne Diamond bearing testament to this. Please don't think that living with a gastric band is the easy way out... far from it in fact. Some of us live with productive burping on a fairly regular basis and the inability to know what will go down and what won't on a daily basis. More importantly, if you were to read about gastric bands, you will discover that the weight never does 'fall off' and that it takes approximately 2 years for the average gastric band patient to lose their excess weight. Good on you Fern. Why should you feel compelled to tell anyone about your surgery, but as a fellow bandster, I'm glad you did. I sincerely hope she will not be villified by people who clearly have no understanding of how the band works.
