Madonna: David Banda adoption battle was like giving birth

But singer says the ordeal made her stronger

Madonna adopted David Banda from Malawi

Madonna has likened her adoption of 2-year-old son David Banda to childbirth.

‘It was painful and a big struggle and I didn’t understand it,’ she admits.

‘In the end I rationalised that when a woman goes through natural childbirth, she suffers an enormous amount.

‘I went through my own kind of birthing pains — dealing with the press on my doorstep, accusing me of kidnapping or whatever.

'But I had to go through some kind of process and in the end it made me stronger so I can’t complain.'

Madge, 49, explained how she felt at a Cannes press conference for I Am Because We Are, a documentary about the plight of orphaned children in Malawi.
