Top Gear host recovering well at home
Thursday, 24 April 2008
Richard Hammond had an emergency operation this week to remove his appendix.
The Top Gear host checked into London’s University College Hospital after suffering severe stomach pains on Tuesday.
The op was a success and Richard, 38, returned to his Gloucestershire home yesterday afternoon with wife Mindy, 42.
‘I started getting pain on Monday night and I went to the doctors first thing the next morning,’ he tells the Daily Mirror.
‘I was referred to a consultant and he said it was appendicitis and I'd have to have it out that day. The pain wasn't too bad and having your appendix out now is like having a tooth out.’
It has also emerged that brave 'Hamster' delayed the surgery for 2 hours to attend a lunch at The Ivy with a competition winner.
‘Three people had won lunch with Richard,’ a source adds. ‘One was supposed to be on holiday but had given it up because he was going to meet his hero. Richard knew this so didn't want to disappoint him.’
Richard will need further treatment to remove kidney stones and to sort out a hernia, which surgeons discovered during his op.
