You couldn’t blame us for being just a teensy bit excited about meeting Alex Zane in a London hotel room. Arriving straight from his early morning Xfm radio show, he’s tired and clamouring for coffee, but still manages to look gorgeous in a black T-shirt, skinny jeans and a pair of old trainers. The 28-year-old becomes tight-lipped when we try to quiz him about his relationships, but still keeps us entertained with anecdotes about his previous life as a student doctor. ‘I once performed major surgery to remove a mole,’ he tells us with a twinkle in his eye. ‘We lost her.’ Medicine’s loss is our gain, we say…

What’s the worst job you’ve ever done?
Lisa Martin, Colchester
I worked as an industrial cleaner in the school holidays. It was rotten. Once, a group of us were cleaning a huge warehouse and one guy in a cherry picker severed his scalp on an industrial fan. It wasn’t pretty.

What made you give up practising medicine?
Jamie Ashcroft, Hammersmith
I realised during my first year at university that medicine wasn’t for me. I was only 19 and it seemed like a massive commitment at the time. I also discovered that I’m extremely squeamish, which didn’t help.

Tell me about your part in Deuce Bigalow! Would you ever be a male gigolo?
Clare Hamilton, Bolton
I only had one line – well actually two, but they cut the second one – apparently I made it too camp. Would I ever consider being a male gigolo? If the market opened up for tall, skinny guys, then why not?

Do you have any phobias?
Alison Cross, Doncaster
I’m terrified of the sound of the clarinet. For me it’s worse than fingernails down a blackboard. My parents forced me to learn it and now I can’t bear hearing it played. I’ve got a thing about feet, too.

Do you have any celebrity mates?
Stacey Riseman, Leigh-on-Sea
Yeah. I’m mates with Dave Berry, Heidi Range and Rosario Dawson.

What’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?
Karen Watts, London
When I was 21 my girlfriend organised a treasure hunt for my birthday. She placed various clues around London, which eventually took me to the left luggage in Euston. Inside a suitcase was a video recorder, which for an impoverished student was a very generous gift.

Tell me about your hat obsession…
Sophie Jones, Hammersmith
I feel naked if I go outside without covering my head. I’ve built up quite a collection of baseball caps, fedoras and trilbies. I’ve also got quite a fetching fishing hat.

Would you ever pose naked? If so, what’s your price?
Fran Jessop, Derby
My price would be enough money to compensate all the people who would be damaged by seeing my naked form.

Would you ever go on a blind date?
Adele Marcroft, Windsor
I’ve already been on a blind date of sorts. I met a girl in a bar when I was drunk. When I turned up to go on a date with her the next day, I had no idea what she looked like.

What couldn’t you live without?
Cherry Lee, Hornchurch
Marmacado sandwiches. That’s Marmite with avocado. Mmmm. And cheese. I love cheese.

Have you always had long hair?
Jessica Adams, Finsbury Park
I had a mullet at school, but it didn’t really suit me.

What’s the most rock’n’roll thing you’ve ever done?
Amanda Murphy, High Wycombe
I once climbed out of a fifth floor window and dangled off the ledge. I was only 19 and hideously drunk. I’d never do it again.

What do you do to make your friends laugh?
Amy Cara, Hoddesdon
Well I don’t tell jokes or anything crap like that, but I think you’re always at your funniest with your friends. I’ve got a close-knit group of mates who I’ve known for years and we all make each other laugh. At school a group of us Sellotaped a boy’s possessions to the ceiling. That was pretty funny.

Who are your heroes?
Allison Curtis, Manchester
I’m a big fan of Eddie Izzard. He’s on my list of people to meet. Johnny Depp, too. The man’s a legend.

Did your mum really make you wear tights under trousers at school? Have you broken the habit yet?
Tania Somerville, Glasgow
Yes, it’s true. They were thick wool tights with an elasticated waist that kept me very warm in winter. I have got out of the habit, but going cold turkey was hard, let me tell you.

Do you have any pets?
Lorna Cooper, Derry
I have a pet cactus called Leonard, and yes, that does count. I used to have two pet rats called Splinter 1 and Splinter 2. I’d like to get a cat, but I live in a first-floor flat.

Which do you prefer: stand-up or presenting?
Gina Lee, London
I love my radio show on Xfm. It’s not too different from stand-up in that it’s live, organic and you never know what might happen. n

Alex Zane will host the final of T4’s MobileAct Unsigned in association with Sony Ericsson and Orange on Channel 4 at 12.30pm on 23 December

Prize Question

Who would play you in a film of your life?
Jennifer Fletcher, Heathrow

I’d say someone like Johnny Depp, but that sounds a little bit pretentious, doesn’t it? Maybe Charlie Sheen. He’s a great actor. He’d have to grow his hair though.
