Vanity Fair Oscar party cancelled by Hollywood writers’ strike

Academy Awards' hottest bash called off

Wednesday, 6 February 2008

Vanity Fair is showing solidarity with the striking Hollywood writers and has cancelled its Oscar party this year.

‘After much consideration, and in support of the writers and everyone else affected by this strike, we have decided that this is not the appropriate year to hold our annual Oscar party,’ it was announced on the Vanity Fair website.

‘We want to congratulate all of this year’s nominees and we look forward to hosting our 15th Oscar party next year.’

In previous years, celebrities including Madonna, Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey and Beyoncé attended the glitzy post-Oscar bash, but now they will have to go elsewhere.

Last month's Golden Globes do was cancelled when all the big-named stars decided to stay away and there is still nervousness about the fate of the Oscars.

The Writers Guild Of America are hopefully close to reaching an agreement to end the strike after a 3-month stand-off.

Which is good news for George Clooney who is thrilled at being nominated for Best Actor, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Johnny Depp.
