Rose and Jack have transformed the Hollywood star's world
Friday, 25 January 2008
Johnny Depp has lived with long-term partner Vanessa Paradis in France for 8 years and the couple adore their two kids.
Fatherhood, says Johnny, has changed his life.
'I wasn’t alive before,' he admits. 'I felt like I just wandered through 35 years in kind of a fog, then Vanessa, little Rose [8] and Jack [5] woke me up. Honestly, it was like being asleep for a long time and then waking up.'
The actor acknowledges Hollywood’s 'insane' and all 'pretend' so he enjoys the calmness of family life in Europe.
'Being famous is kind of an occupational hazard,' he says. 'Once you reach a certain point, it takes a lot of money to buy a simple life. But I’ve had worse jobs. Anyone in this kind of privileged position has no right to cry about it.'
Johnny, 44, can't remember the last time he wept but he gets all emotional when he shares special occasions with his loved ones.
'There are things, especially as a parent, like Christmas with your children…' he says. 'That’s devastating stuff, in a very good way. It’s the only reason to live.'
Fortunately Jack and Rose enjoy his films.
'For a while my kiddies couldn’t stop watching Pirates One,' he reveals, 'then they moved on to Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
'It’s strange when I walk into a room and hear that familiar score or voice. I exit as quickly as possible. I hate seeing myself on screen, I find it strange. But to my kids it’s normal.
'All they’ve ever known is Papa on TV or on a DVD cover. They can go from watching one of my movies to the dinner table and not mention the film at all.'
Johnny's new movie Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street is released nationwide today.
