Brokeback Mountain star believed to have gone into cardiac arrest
Wednesday, 23 January 2008
Heath Ledger's death yesterday at his New York apartment was caused by a suspected heart attack.
Paramedics found the actor curled up in a ball at the foot of his bed but failed to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead at 3.35pm.
New York Police spokesman Paul Browne confirmed prescription bottles were found in the room - but says there were no scattered pills as first reported.
Heath, 28, is believed to have been battling substance abuse for some time and briefly checked into rehab after spitting from Michelle Williams, mum to his 2-year-old daughter, in September.
He moved to downtown Manhattan where he was regularly spotted on the party scene but insiders claim he became a recluse, struggled to sleep and had terrible mood swings.
‘Michelle cared for him deeply but his life was unmanageable,’ a source tells the Daily Mail.
‘He went into rehab during his filming of The Dark Knight…but left fairly quickly, within a number of days. Tragically he never faced up to his addictions.’
Heath’s dad Kim released an emotional statement outside his home in Australia yesterday praising his son for being an ‘inspiration to many’.
The official cause of death is still being investigated.
