David Beckham joins Unicef in Sierra Leone

Becks takes part in kickabout with deprived children

David Beckham

David Beckham took part in a special kickabout in Sierra Leone yesterday.

Becks, 32, is visiting the West African country with Unicef to raise awareness of the poor conditions and plight of its children.

And the footie hunk – who is an ambassador for the children’s charity - was shocked by the scenes he saw as he visited a local hospital.

‘We can’t turn a blind eye to tens of thousands of young children who die every day in the developing world, mostly from causes that are preventable,’ he tells the Daily Mirror.

‘It’s shocking and tragic, especially when the solutions are simple – things like vaccinations against measles or using a mosquito net to reduce the chance of getting malaria.’

David, wearing a black Unicef T-shirt, even helped give an oral polio vaccine to a newborn baby, before taking to a dusty pitch to play some football.

The kids looked delighted as he showed off his skills.

David is spending 4 days in Sierra Leone.
