Veteran actress Liz Dawn to have final scenes in soap
Friday, 18 January 2008
Corrie fans are in for an emotional ride tonight when show legend Vera Duckworth is killed off.
Actress Liz Dawn, 69, is leaving the ITV soap after 33 years because she’s suffering from lung disease emphysema.
In tonight’s double bill tear-jerker, she’ll be seen being carted off by undertakers as on-screen hubby Jack – played by Bill Tarmey, 66 – watches on.
Liz, who recorded her final scenes last month, says she’ll miss working on the cobbled street.
‘It was very emotional filming Vera's death scenes but I do think it is the right decision for the character,’ says Liz. ‘I have had 33 marvellous years in Coronation Street and will miss everyone very much.’
Details of how Vera dies have been kept under wraps, with producers set to choose from 3 different endings.
Whatever the case, the ending still promises to be traumatic as the character has been seen preparing to move to Blackpool in recent weeks.
Last night, co-star Bill paid tribute to Liz.
‘Liz is a wonderful woman,’ he tells the Daily Record. ‘We have never had a cross word. She was a joy to work with and one of the funniest people I know.'
Coronation Street airs on ITV1 tonight at 7.30pm and 8.30pm. We can’t wait. Eek!
