Leona Lewis is said to be considering a lead role in West Side Story after being approached by choreographer David Winters.
The singer will play Maria in the Leonard Bernstein musical – and insider’s say it will do wonders for her reputation in America.
‘Everyone wants her to do it,’ a close pal reveals. ‘It will be a great opportunity for her to launch a career in the States. Her family are behind her and David thinks she’ll be dynamite in the part.’
If talks with Leona, 22, are successful, she will reunite with her childhood singing coach Janet Edwards, who has been asked to do the vocal training for the production.
‘I suggested that Leona would be the most wonderful Maria,’ she tells the Sunday Express.
‘She has the vocal range and acting abilities to make this exciting role her own. David seemed very enthusiastic and things are moving forward.’
A reunion of the original Broadway cast is being held in New York on Wednesday to mark the show’s 50th anniversary.
David plans on opening his modern production of the hit musical next October.
