Welsh opera star weeps as he loses out to Leon
Saturday, 15 December 2007
Rhydian Roberts was the bookies' favourite to win The X Factor tonight, but lost to Scottish teenager Leon Jackson.
The shy rugby player, 24, teamed up with compatriot Katherine Jenkins for a rousing rendition of Westlife hit You Raise Me Up, but it wasn't enough to win the lion's share of the viewers' votes.
'I want to thank everyone for calling and voting for me because I know the phonelines are expensive,' Rhydian announced. (Bless him.)
Host Dermot O'Leary quickly had to jump in and say, 'Well, they're not that expensive' before Simon Cowell felt compelled to jump out of his judge's chair and wrestle Rhyd to the floor.
He didn't get the £1million contract but there's no doubt Rhydian is a star.
As Leon was interviewed by Fearne Cotton after the show, he cried with joy but the blond Welshman stared into space and wept silent tears of his own.
