X Factor winner's Spirit smashes records

Monday, 19 November 2007

Leona Lewis was celebrating last night after smashing the record for the fastest selling UK debut album of all time.

The X Factor winner’s LP Spirit sold an incredible 375,872 copies last week to beat the Spice Girls Greatest Hits to the top spot.

Geri, Posh, Emma and the two Mels trailed by some 300,000 copies.

Leona, 22, beat previous record holders the Arctic Monkeys – shifting 12,000 more than their debut Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not last year.

And it was a double victory for the Hackney songbird. Bleeding Love held on to No 1 in the singles chart for the fourth week. It is now the best-selling single of the year.

‘This is Leona’s day,’ Simon Cowell, 48, tells The Sun. ‘I am absolutely thrilled for her.’

Leona and Simon are now planning to conquer the States. Bleeding Love is released there on 14 January, while the album follows on 18 March.
