Little Britain stars stunned by success of show

Comedy duo David Walliams and Matt Lucas say they never expected a hit

Matt Lucas and David Walliams

Little Britain stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams admit that they never expected the sketch show to gain a mainstream following.

'I thought the appeal would be limited to gay men and students,' confesses David, 36.

'I didn't expect it to be that successful.'

Instead Little Britain has been a massive hit since it was first screened in 2003 and the pair have profited from a spin-off tour and several lucrative merchandising deals.

Matt and David recently released the second edition of DVD game The Only Game In The Village and are now hoping to crack America with a new series for cable station HBO.

The duo insist their on-going success is down to the fact that they are best friends and work brilliantly as a comedy partnership.

'I can never see a day where I don't want to work with David,' Matt, 33, tells the Daily Mirror.

'I don't know if we will still be working together in our sixties, but the main thing is I hope we will still be friends.

'I don't want to be doing Vicky Pollard when I'm 55. There will be something wrong about that!'
