Robbie Williams is reportedly £200,000 poorer after giving the cash to two aquaintances to set up a fashion label in New York.
They allegedly spent the money on partying instead.
Robbie only learned of the alleged scam when a good friend told him he was being used. He then confronted the pair and threatened to call the police.
'At best Rob was being used, at worst, he was being conned,' says a source.
Robbie, 33, who lives in a 6-bedroom, 9-bathroom mansion in Beverly Hills, is very sociable and attracts lots of hangers-on.
'Robbie wants to be everyone's friend and everyone jokes that he's the perfect host,' a mate tells the Daily Mirror.
A spokesman for the singer declined to comment. 'He agreed to give the money but had a change of heart and that's what the row was about,' an aide insisted.
