Nicole Kidman has been told to pile on the pounds for her new movie The Reader.
The normally slender actress is to play Hanna Schmitz, a middle-aged woman who has a passionate affair with a 15-year-old boy in post-war Germany.
‘Nicole has said this is one of her most challenging film roles,’ a close pal of the actress reveals.
‘The film is set over several decades so her character changes a lot. The part she plays demands that she get fatter throughout the movie as her character slips into middle age.’
Nicole thought she'd be padded out by the wardrobe department to play the later scenes, but director Stephen Daldry has apparently convinced her to actually gain the weight so it looks more realistic.
‘She has been eating about 4 meals a day,’ the friend tells the Mail On Sunday,
‘It’s not usual to see her working through a big bowl of pasta, white bread and then dessert. She’s having to gorge herself.’
But while it may seem like a good excuse to overindulge – the 40-year-old is said to be struggling to maintain the diet.
‘Nicole love her new bosom, but she is finding eating so much makes her lethargic and slow. She’s usually running on adrenaline and has to be reminded to eat a meal.’
The Reader is due to be released in December 2008.
