Comedian was left speechless when meeting his idol Robert De Niro

Ricky Gervais has admitted he was lost for words the first time he met his hero Robert De Niro.

The comedian, 46, has a brief cameo in Robert's new film Stardust and was more than excited to work with the Hollywood legend.

'It was fantastic, he's been my favourite actor for 20 years,' Ricky tells the Daily Express. 'It was the first time I've ever been starstruck.

'I decided to muck around and try to put him off.'

Ricky must have made quite an impression as Robert agreed to make an appearance in an episode of Rickys BBC sitcom Extras.
