Charlie Sheen didn't have the best of Christmases

Actor Charlie Sheen was arrested yesterday and spent most of Christmas Day in jail on suspicion of assault, menacing and criminal mischief.

The 44-year-old was taken into custody after an an emergency call was made to police from a house in Aspen, Colorado.

Charlie, who married Brooke Mueller Sheen in May 2008, was released at 7pm on $8,500 (£5,300) bail.

He and Brooke are mum and dad to 9-month-old twin boys.

Charlie and ex-wife Denise Richards split in 2005 when the actress was pregnant with their second daughter and became embroiled in a bitter post-separation clash.

In a court filing in April 2006, Denise requested a restraining order against her husband, and alleged that Charlie had abused prescription drugs, visited porn web sites, gambled compulsively and threatened to kill her.

Last year Charlie apologised to Denise for an abusive voicemail he left for her during their break-up.

In the message, which was leaked on the internet, he said he hoped she 'rots in f***ing hell' and called her 'a 'f***ing c***'.
