Robin Williams: Wife and kids got me through alcoholism

The comedian credits family for addiction win

Robin Williams

Robin Williams is a changed man – thanks to his family’s support during his recent stint in rehab.

The funnyman, 56, sought treatment for his alcoholism last August – and is now fit and well, thanks to wife Marsha and children Zachary, 24, Zelda, 18, and Cody, 15.

‘I’m so happy we stayed together,’ he says.

‘Family and marriage are beautiful things, and it’s not easy to do it in today’s world. Everything is so materialistic.’

During his swift rise to fame on the 1978-1982 sitcom Mork And Mindy, Robin became addicted to alcohol and cocaine.

He sought professional help and successfully battled his demons, but after 20 years of sobriety, he hit the bottle once again.

‘It’s not caused by anything – the addiction is just there. It lies in wait for the time when you think, “I’m okay”’,' Robin tells Weekend magazine.

‘Being drunk is another side of yourself that even you don’t know. There’s another person who appears.'
