Will Nicole Richie give birth in jail?

The pregnant Simple Life star could face up to a year in prison

A judge in LA has put back Nicole Richie’s trial for drug-related driving charges until the middle of next month.

Nicole, 25, who’s thought to be 12 weeks pregnant, was arrested just before Christmas for allegedly driving the wrong way down a road in Burbank, California.

Police claim that when they arrested her, the star said she’d been smoking marijuana. However, she’s pleading not guilty.

Under Californian law, two convictions in a 10-year period for driving under the influence carry a jail sentence of up to a year – and ex-heroin addict Nicole was found guilty of the same offence in 2003.

One friend says: ‘She’s traumatised at the prospect of jail. She’s seen the damage it caused Paris Hilton.’

A lengthy sentence could mean giving birth in custody. Although Nicole’s PR refuse to comment on her pregnancy, she’s apparently told her mum Brenda and her pal Mischa Barton.

Nicole and her boyfriend of six months Joel Madden, 28 – the lead singer of Good Charlotte – have also been seen out buying baby clothes.
