Although it’s certainly true that Tom’s last blockbuster Mission: Impossible III disappointed both critics and fans – it’s unlikely to do his career much long-term damage.
The star’s now so rich that, although he was dropped by Paramount Stuidos, his response was simply to buy a studio of his own: United Artists.
His first movie for UA, Lions For Lambs, in which he plays a senator, will be released in November.
In the US, movie fans prefer their action heroes to be rampantly hetero, so marriage and fatherhood won’t do him any harm at the box office.
But now that Tom, 44, has his own studio, he doesn’t need to curry favour with anyone. It would be cynical to suggest that his marriage to Katie, 28, is anything but a love match.
Answer: Tom doesn't need publicity stunts.
