Halle Berry admits suicide attempt

Actress nearly killed herself after marriage breakdown

Halle Berry tried to take her own life after her first marriage ended in tatters.

The 40-year-old actress attempted to gas herself with exhaust fumes after her union to David Justice came to a bitter end in 1996.

'I felt worthless after that marriage. I shut myself in my car in my garage with the engine running and I sat there, smelling the fumes,' she tells Parade magazine in an upcoming article.

'I started to think about how selfish I was being and how my mother would react if I stayed in that car. It was a struggle, but I made a pact with myself that I'd never contemplate taking my life again.'

Halle was divorced from second husband, musician Eric Benét, in 2005 and now says that she'll never marry again.
