Star says stint in rehab made their love stronger
Sunday, 27 May 2007
Keith Urban says his marriage to Nicole Kidman, 39, is the first time he's really committed to someone - and a stretch in rehab strengthened their bond.
The pair met at a gala dinner in January 2005 and married on 25 June 2006. But three months into their marriage, Keith checked into the Betty Ford Clinic to be treated for alcohol and cocaine addiction.
'I think that pain can knit you together more than joy,' he says. 'It came along with facing up to things about being a better person.
'You can't expect to be in the kind of relationship that I was looking for if I wasn't willing to be the person I can be.'
But now, after marriage - and spending his 39th birthday in rehab - he's emerged a better man.
'I am more selfless and I am learning so much about myself from loving her,' he tells The Sunday Times magazine.
'I am more comfortable with who I am because at the core I'm happy.'
