California has VIP inmates scheme
Friday, 11 May 2007
A petition sent to California governer Arnold Schwarzenegger asking for Paris Hilton to be let off her jail sentence will fail, say sources in his office.
But if the hotel heiress, who violated the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case, does have to serve time behind bars, it's doubtful she'll do the full 45 days - and life will be fairly cushy.
A new Californian scheme lets prisoners convicted of non-violent crimes pay for an 'upgrade' of their cell and VIP inmates can have an iPod.
The socialite's prison term could also be cut to three weeks or less because she'll probably earn time off for good behaviour.
'It's possible that it could be 21 days, 23 days,' LA County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore explains.
Or even just a week.
Because Californian jails are 'bursting at the seams', there's a good chance that Paris will be released after only serving 10% of her sentence.
