Becks makes malaria appeal

Footballer urges soccer fans for donations

David Beckham

David Beckham is campaigning to stop the spread of malaria.

The 32-year-old has made a series of television ads in the States asking football fans to donate $10 - the cost of one mosquito net - to help prevent the disease.

In the ad, Becks is seen kicking a soccer ball into a goal with a missing net.

The star, who will join LA Galaxy in July, is making his appeal on behalf of the charity www.malarianomore.org.

The disease remains the No 1 killer of children under five in sub-Saharan Africa, claiming more than 1 million lives a year. There are 350 to 500 million cases of malaria annually.
