Andrew Lloyd Webber: Grease isn't a patch on my Joseph

Read our Q&A about why he's thrilled his show is a Saturday night winner

Andrew Llyod Webber

How do you get on with the rest of your panellists?

Brilliantly. When we chose the 12 finalists in Ireland, we were crying and laughing until 3am.

So what do you think of Grease?

Joseph has a great story, while Grease is a very funny spoof of the 50s genre. The recent Grease show in the US was a complete catastrophe. The idea was mine, but they did it without me and messed it up. They trivialised it.

So you don’t wish you were doing Grease instead of Joseph?

ITV approached me last year, but what could I say about the Grease contestants? Are they pretty? Can they sing? That’s all I can say. My loyalty lies with the BBC anyway.

What about Simon Cowell?

He’s terrific. I’d be intrigued to see what would happen if Simon and I did something together. We’ve vaguely talked about it. He’s from a different world in that I have a very theatrical background, while he comes from the commercial pop world. But never say never.
