Jesse Metcalfe, pop-star girlfriend Nadine Coyle split

Publicist confirms they have decided to part

Desperate Housewives actor Jesse Metcalfe and Ireland's Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle have ended their relationship, Metcalfe's rep confirms to PEOPLE.

Without elaborating on the cause of the split, his publicist says, "They have decided to part ways."

The actor, 28, and the girl-band singer have been an item since they met in Australia – he was promoting Housewives and she was promoting her band's album – in February of last year.

Both have endured distance and endless scrutiny in gossip columns on both sides of the Atlantic. The scrutiny only intensified when Metcalfe entered a rehab clinic to deal with alcohol issues in March. U.K.'s The Sun newspaper ran an item ("She's as Nad as hell at Jesse") claiming that Coyle was furious at Metcalfe for being spotted with a mystery woman in L.A. Metcalfe's rep says the report is "simply untrue."

Coyle's rep could not be reached for comment.

Of his stint in rehab, Metcalfe's publicist adds that the actor "is out and feeling great."
