Helen Mirren: I'm scared of telephones

Actress tries not to answer calls

Helen Mirren may be fearless on stage and screen, but when it comes to answering her own telephone, she's a quivering wreck.

The Oscar winner is so frightened of phones that she tries not to make calls and refuses to answer them.

'It just makes me so nervous,' she says. 'I will always avoid picking it up if I can. The invention of the answering machine was amazing.'

Helen, 61, also reveals that she has no maternal instincts.

'Having children is just not something that interests me,' she says. 'An awful lot of women have children because there is such pressure to do so. It's not right.'
