Drew Barrymore: I used to fancy David Letterman

Actress reveals her childhood crushes

As a kid, Drew Barrymore wasn't much for the Tiger Beat scene.

"The guys I had crushes on growing up were Ted Koppel and David Letterman," she tells Harper's Bazaar in its February issue.

The actress, whose upcoming movie Music and Lyrics costars Hugh Grant, says her dream collaborator is Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen. She explains, "I like smart, weird, funny and sharp."

Someone who probably fits the bill: Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, 26, whom Barrymore, 31, has been dating for five years.

"The longest I've ever been with someone was like two to three years, so I'm in uncharted waters," she tells Bazaar. "Right now I'm more into championing him as a human being than gushing love for him."

The secret to their longevity? "You have to reinvent your relationship if you want to continue being together," she says. "Right now I'm in a phase of 'I'm not even your girlfriend. I'm your best friend who is madly in love with you.' I'm really interested in watching him right now."

The pair live together in New York City, and she says their busy schedules can sometimes be welcome. "There have been days when we've been like, 'Man, if we could just come home every night and eat Chinese on the couch and watch movies.' But then you get into that routine and you're like, 'God, I miss missing you.' "

Barrymore, a former child star-turned-wild teen, laughs at the idea that she's now "the old houndstooth," but she has some advice for young actresses such as Lindsay Lohan. "I know Lindsay, and I like her very much," she says. "You just have to try to be as graceful as you can. You know, you flub, you flub. And that's life. ... I think, do what you want, but just be professional."
