Ben Stiller: I tried LSD at 16

Meet The Parents star had bad trip

Monday, 1 January 2007

Ben Stiller took LSD when he was a teenager, but the hallucinations he experienced were so bad he had to phone his mum and dad for help.

Ben, 41, son of comedy duo Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, was just 16 when he decided to try the mind-bending drug for the first time.

'It was scary. A bad, bad trip,' Ben tells The Times magazine. 'The first and last time I ever did it.

'I freaked out and called my parents, who were in Los Angeles doing an episode of The Love Boat. They just had no experience of it, they had no idea how to calm me down.

'My dad said, "Oh I understand what you're going through, I smoked a cigarette when I was 10, and I was sick for two days".

'I was saying, "No, no, Dad, it's not like that".

Ben – currently starring in new film Night At The Museum – quips: 'Next time you're on acid, don't call your parents!'
