Angelina Jolie: Suffering makes me a better actress

Tomb Raider star thinks she can relate to troubled characters

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie, 31, says difficult experiences have helped her movie performances.

The Tomb Raider star - who won an Oscar in 1999 for her portrayal of a mental patient in Girl, Interrupted - insists dealing with emotional trauma in her personal life has made it easier to relate to troubled characters.

She says: 'The fuller your life is, the more of a well of reserves you have to pull from. Because I have a full life, I can relate to certain kinds of loss and certain kinds of love. I've had very extreme emotions and very extreme things have happened in my life - good and bad.'

Angelina is estranged from her father, actor John Voight, and has been divorced twice.
