Lily Allen: I just want to buy a house

Smile singer is saving up for her own place

Lily Allen

Lily Allen has had a no 1 single and top-selling album, but she's still a bit strapped for cash - and astonished by her popularity.

‘I’m not exactly rolling in it now but last year I was living off hand-outs from my mum,’ she reveals. 'I was going back and forth to Manchester, trying to record the album. I was very lonely, and it was a difficult time.

‘I still don’t have enough money to buy a house in London, and that’s my aim.’

Dubbed ‘the sound of 2006', the pint-sized pop princess, 21, first showcased her music on MySpace, before her career rocketed.

At the T in the Park festival in July, Smile had just gone to the top of the charts and she 'was hammered'.

'I was going up to all these boys in bands,' the singer tells The Observer Music Monthly. 'I was saying, "Are you in a band? Are you at number one? Well, I am!"

'They all f**king hated me!'
