Mel B: I didn't know we'd broken up

Singer devastated after hearing of split with Eddie Murphy by phone

Mel B only found out she'd be dumped by Eddie Murphy when friends called to tell her.

The former Spice Girl, 31, was flying back from the UK to LA when the news broke that Eddie had told a Dutch TV station he'd ditched her and wanted a DNA test to prove the baby was his.

The Beverly Hills Cop star later appeared at the premiere of his new film Dreamgirls with producer Tracey Edmonds, who he claimed to have been dating for a month and a half.

'Mel's beyond gutted,' a friend tells The Daily Mirror. 'She was set to marry this guy and now he's knocked the wind out of her.

Stepping off the plane, Mel was stunned to see so many photographers, all asking how she felt - then she got messages asking if she was okay after what Eddie had done.

'At first she thought it was some kind of joke,' says Mel's pal. 'But then she called one of her friends who read the story down the phone to her. She's been in pieces ever since.'

Mel, 31, and Eddie, 45, began dating in June and she soon discovered she was pregnant. The Leeds-born singer is thought to be incensed that Eddie is questioning paternity and is set to hire a top lawyer to fight the allegations.

Eddie's spokesman said yesterday: 'Mr Murphy does not discuss his personal life publicly, so whatever is being reported is a fabrication and did not occur.'
