Black Eyed Peas top AMAs

Band takes home three awards at the LA music ceremony

Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas were the big winners at the American Music Awards in L.A. on Tuesday night, which also featured a surprise appearance by Britney Spears and Clay Aiken joking about his recent beef with Kelly Ripa.

The Peas took home three awards, more than any other artist, winning best rap/hip-hop album, best rap/hip-hop group, and best soul/R&B group. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige and Rascal Flatts took home two awards apiece.

Less fortunate was Kevin Federline, who was not in attendance but still managed to get attention – for all the wrong reasons. In a comedy skit, host Jimmy Kimmel took a fake K-Fed, crated him up in a box, and threw him into the ocean, calling him a "no-hit wonder."

Shortly after the skit, Federline's estranged wife, Spears, took the stage to present the award for favorite female soul/R&B artist to Mary J. Blige. If Spears had any response to Kimmel's bit, she didn't let it show.

Jamie Foxx earned the award for favorite male soul/R&B artist and also performed "Wish U Were Here" from his 2005 album Unpredictable. Foxx dedicated his performance to his biological mother, who attended the show and whom Foxx hadn't seen in years.

Other award winners of the night included Nickelback, Faith Hill, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Eminem, Sean Paul, Shakira, and Kirk Franklin. American Idol winner Carrie Underwood was named best new breakthrough artist.

The audience was treated to performances from artists such as Beyoncé, the Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z, Lionel Richie (introduced by his daughter Nicole), and Barry Manilow. The event was held at the Shrine Auditorium.
