Sammy Winward: I don't feel like a single mum

Emmerdale actress knows she can rely on her family

Sammy Winward says she doesn't consider herself a single parent – thanks to the help of her mum Jane.

The 21-year-old became pregnant when she was 19 with then fiancé Blackburn Rovers' David Dunn, but the pair split three months after little Mia's birth.

Sammy moved back in with her parents and, since she returned to the Emmerdale set last year, Jane's become Mia's full-time childminder.

'Mum knew that's what I wanted to do and I wouldn't have wanted anyone else,' says Sammy. 'She comes with me when I film Emmerdale and we stay in my apartment in Leeds. I'm very lucky.'

Life has moved on for the actress – she's bagged herself a new boyfriend, rugby player David Mercer – but she won't be packing her bags any time soon.

'If I ever moved out, I'd only a move a few doors down and I'd be back all the time,' Sammy tells Sunday magazine. 'I'm quite happy with the way things are.'
