Borat visits the motherland

Comedian invited to Kazakhstan

Borat

The government of Kazakhstan has invited Borat – aka 35-year-old comedian Sacha Baron Cohen – to visit the country.

The Kazakhs are mortified at the damage spoof journalist Borat has done to the Central Asian nation's reputation.

Borat has claimed that the favoured mode of transport in Kazakhstan is a wooden cart pulled by peasant women, that wine is made of horse urine, and that there is a popular folk song titled Throw The Jew Down The Well.

The Kazakh government was initially outraged but is now doing its best to see the funny side.

'It's useless to offend an artist and threaten to sue him. It will only further damage the country's reputation and make Borat even more popular,' said deputy foreign minister Rakhat Aliyev.

A new movie Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan has its British premiere next week at the London Film Festival.

It shows Borat, supposedly a journalist from the state-run TV network and 'Kazkhstan's sixth most famous man' - dispatched to the US, where he becomes obsessed with tracking down Baywatch star Pamela Anderson.
