Madonna given a year to prove she makes a good mum

Singer placed on probation before being allowed to officially adopt African child

Madonna may have filed adoption papers for 13-month-old David Banda but she'll have to prove she can make a good mum before he officially becomes her son.

The singer, 48, has been told she'll be placed 'on probation' for a year before the Malawian courts can decide if she can keep him for good.

Madonna has met David's dad Yohane who was forced to put his son into an orphanage after his wife Marita died of a fever a week after giving birth.

He told reporters: 'She asked me many questions. She and her husband seem happy with David. I am happy for him. Madonna promised me that as the child grows she will bring him back to visit.'

Madonna already has a son Rocco, five, with her husband Guy Ritchie, 38, and a daughter, Lourdes, nine, from a relationship with Carlos Leon who's looking after the children in London while the couple are in Africa.

Members of the Scottish Parliament's cross-party group on Malawi have criticised the adoption. Karen Gillon said: 'This smacks of celebrity-itis and I think it's more about Madonna's needs than the child's.'
