Arctic Monkeys win Mercury Music Prize

Sheffield band scope top music award

Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys scooped the Mercury Music Prize last night.

And the band, from Sheffield, were in top form when they collected their award.

Singer Alex Turner said: 'Normally this would have gone to a band that hasn't sold as many albums as we have. But tonight it's gone to good tunes. That's what we try to do. No tricks. Too many people are trying too many tricks.'

The band said they would donate their £20,000 winnings to charity.

Pundits had predicted the band, who are surprisingly well known to be MMP winners, would be ignored by the judges who traditionally pick an underdog for the prize.
