So, it’s the final season of Lost on Sky One and we’re promised all the answers.
I do hope so because I’ve been following closely and taking notes and yet 10 minutes into Monday’s opening double episode something happened that I swore never would: I’m turning into my mum.
No viewing experience with my mother is complete without her whispering: ‘Isn’t he dead?’ (Locke). ‘Whose side is he on?’(Ben) and ‘Who’s that?’ (Neil, anyone?).
I can just about cope. Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly), baby Aaron, Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Sun (Yunjin Kim), are off the island with Kate pretending to be Aaron’s mum because... forget it; if you haven’t been following I’m not going to explain it.
Unless they keep the details of their escape a secret, evil tycoon Charles Widmore (Neighbours’ Alan Dale who’s in everything these days), will murder the survivors still on the island – for some reason.
But Ben (Michael Emerson) has convinced Jack they have to go back or everyone will die – for some other reason.
Oh, and somehow Ben moved the island at the end of the last series which is mucking around with time.
Here I’ll confess something that may be unpopular but I’ve never been afraid to stand alone.
I wish someone had made Sawyer (Josh Holloway) keep his shirt on. His body isn’t bad, but I’ve been spoiled by the twin gods Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman and am now intolerant of male flab on my screen.
So I was relieved when Sawyer stopped running around topless and put on a discarded shirt he found on the beach.
The decidedly shifty Dan (Jeremy Davies) appeared to know what was going on but wasn’t sharing. He did try to explain the space/time continuum to Sawyer but... well.
In LA lethal weapon Sayid busted Hurley out of psychiatric hospital killing three men in the process and going on the lam. (I never miss an opportunity to write: ‘on the lam’ and ‘perp’ too. Blame it on a childhood wasted in front of ‘70s American cop shows).
Unfortunately Sayid got shot with a tranquilliser dart and while Jack was reviving him Ben made an ill-advised visit to Hurley to try to persuade him to trust him. The upshot was that Hurley naturally fled into the arms of the police confessing to every crime the LAPD wanted cleared up if only they’d protect him from Ben.
So, how will the Oceanic 6 get Hurley out of jail? Is Locke’s (Terry O’Quinn) body safe in the freezer of the butcher’s shop where Ben left it or will there be an unfortunate Sweeney Todd moment?
Will any of us know be any the wiser in 30-odd episodes time? I don’t know. But I’ve started, so I might as well finish.
