Planet Fashionistas will know I’ll use any excuse to slip on some false lashes and fishnets, and last night to celebrate our friend Matt’s birthday, we kicked off the evening with champagne at his glam Soho shag-pad - a fully functioning babe lair seconds away from theatreland - then headed to the West End revival of the musical Cabaret.
Daniel Radcliffe may be hogging all the headlines with his erotic fascination with his four-legged friends in Equus at The Gielgud, but next door at The Lyric, Cabaret’s the most gratuitous flesh-fest any of us had ever seen on the West End stage.
Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’s James Dreyfuss totally stole the show in his leather corset, cod-piece and knee-high boots, while Sheila Hancock’s portrayal of Fraulein Schneider was wonderfully measured and utterly charming.
Anna Maxwell Martin played the frenetic, fragile Sally Bowles, the role made famous by Liza Minnelli, but I did find myself wondering whether she was deliberately singing off key to add colour to her character.
Matt - who’s a huge fan of Liza Minnelli – pointed out ‘If she could sing, you wouldn’t need c**k! Put THAT in your blog!’
Thank you, Matt. I may just do that…xxx
