So, you’ve got your heart set on pulling one of those skinny-jean wearing, floppy-fringed kings of cool. Chances are you may know and like the guy already but don’t know quite how to go about getting his attention, or alternatively you just fancy bagging one of these awkward creatures for a bit of Indie-cent fun… (ahem). Here's how it's done. Happy hunting.
1. Make the first move
Many Indie Boys don’t bite (unless asked). Although the average indie hipster may appear to be too cool for school, they do tend to be quite approachable and fun-loving, especially when the initial contact is instigated by a member of the opposite sex. It’s not that he’s necessarily lazy or not interested, it could be that he is in fact rather shy and the cool bravado is in fact a form of social defence which is actually quite easy to brush aside once engaged in fun conversation or some dancing…
2. Massage his ego
Most Indie Boys tend to follow fashion trends and popular culture quite closely, and many of them may model themselves on their favourite bands and icons. In fact some may be creative types –musicians, djs, writers, poets, models, fashion designers - all are rife in the indie-underworld. If you think he have a cool haircut or great taste in clobber, SAY SO. Nothing makes your Indie Boy happier than to have his carefully-honed wardrobe complimented or to be told he could be the next big thing since Julian Casablancas. Don’t overplay though, and pick your moment carefully.
3. Play it cool
Initially, there’s no harm in appearing nonchalant yourself. Indie Boys like their girls to be cool, intelligent, witty, sassy and usually care-free. Try to catch his eye, hold it for a second or so and smile and then continue If he thinks you are sure of yourself (and possibly interested), he’ll be intrigued. You may even find he finds the bottle to speak to you himself or to dance near you. If not resort to point 1.
4. Dress the part
Image is important. A great weapon in your arsenal is the way you dress. If you’ve got the right look, you are half-way there with Indie boy. Indie Boy bait include Katy Perry, Pixie Geldof, Agyness Deyn, and the high priestess of indie hipsters herself Alexa Chung, so select your style icon and seek inspiration from her look accordingly.
5. Finally, don’t worry about not being indie enough
Even though it is important to look the part, don’t worry if you don’t know everything about the latest Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man or White Lies EP. Be true to yourself and if you’re really not into something don’t be afraid to say it. He’ll like the fact you actually have a brain and an opinion on things. If in doubt, just listen to what he has to say to you as he’ll probably relish the opportunity to tell you about his likes and dislikes, and don’t be afraid to ask him yourself.
Check Neil out - oh and his band Scarlett Feeva too - at The Watershed in Wimbledon this Friday 17 October at 9pm or find them on Facebook.
