I have a secret hotel fetish, and have had the pleasure of spending a number of Hard Day’s Nights at the Hard Day’s Night, Liverpool’s swankiest new four-star hotel with – wait for it - a Beatles theme round the corner from the legendary Cavern Club...or label-laden WAG Boutique Cricket, depending on your cultural references.
Fashion from the 60s made me decide I wanted to be a Style Editor – Vidal Sassoon and Twiggy are my style icons, and I’m hugely inspired by the graphic, geometric aesthetic of the time – but the Hard Day’s Night is more like a modern boutique hotel with Beatles’ accents rather than a film set from an Austin Powers movie.
You won’t find the bell boys dressed as Sergeant Pepper or hear Yellow Submarine being piped into your bathroom when you flush the loo, but for ardent Beatles fans, there’s specially commissioned artwork in every room, a state-of-the-art entertainment system that plays the Fab Four on repeat as a default setting, super-cute Do Not Disturb signs say ‘I’ve Had A Hard Day’s Night’ and Help’ on the flip side, and a drinks menu featuring cocktails such as Strawberry Fields With Pepper or my personal favourite a Honey Can’t Buy Me Love.
Of the two penthouses – the Lennon Suite and the McCartney Suite - I’m always massively drawn to the Lennon Suite, with iconic photos of John and Yoko and the white grand piano John played in the Imagine video taking centre stage. I’m a classically trained pianist but not even I would dare lay a finger on it.
And depending on how well your dirty weekend’s panning out The Two Of Us is a fully licensed wedding suite dominated by photos of John, Paul, George and Ringo with their favourite wives where you can say “Love Me Do”. Unsurprisingly Heather didn’t make the final cut.
The Hard Day’s Night Hotel 41 North John Street, Liverpool L2 6RR. Call 0151 236 1964 for reservations. Luxury rooms from £170.00 per night.
