Dan Wootton: I adore Pink but I'm mad with Lady Gaga who's being irresponsible
I adore pop music more than almost anything in the world. But it's not often a popstar as special as Pink comes along.
She has that unique ability to make an album that includes stomping and memorable anthems like Blow Me (One Last Kiss) through to tender and emotional ballads like her new single Try.
In fact, I've become so taken with Try this week that I want to share some of its beautiful lyrics:
Funny how the heart can be deceiving
More than just a couple times
Why do we fall in love so easy
Even when it's not right
Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone's bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn't mean you're gonna die
You've gotta get up and try try try
But don't take my word for it, listen to Pink's voice at its best here:
VILLAIN: LADY GAGA
Now, I need to point out I have been one of Lady Gaga's champions in the UK press from well before she was anywhere near a household name.
In fact, I have never once criticised her. Despite an inevitable backlash, I thought her second album Born This Way was one of the best pop albums in a long time and The Edge of Glory one of the greatest pop songs.
But, for the first time, I'm mad with her.
Gaga has made a lot of the fact that she is the biggest role model in the life of millions of teenagers around the world, many of whom who are having a tough time getting through the difficult teenage years and are being bullied at school.
So to get up on stage in Amsterdam this week and smoke marijuana on stage was completely irresponsible.
She told the crowd: 'I want you to know it has totally changed my life and I've really cut down on drinking. It has been a totally spiritual experience for me with my music.'
The result of her actions will be that a legion of teens around the world thinking getting stoned is the answer to their problems.
I disagree and, as a result, I don't think it was a responsible use of the role model status she has made so much of.
